Why take the path to instructor?

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Requirements

Getting hired by an airline as a first officer—or, co-pilot—requires applicants to hold an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate. In addition to passing applicable knowledge and practical tests, applicants must:

  • Be at least 23 years old
  • Hold a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating
  • Have recorded at least 1,500 hours total time as a pilot
  • Have recorded at least 50 hours in a multi-engine airplane

Prospective airline pilots won't meet all of these requirements just by attending flight school or an aviation program at a university. A common path toward earning the necessary hours and gaining valuable experience is working as a flight instructor!

What are some questions to ask yourself about flight school?

Sebring Flight Academy offers flight training for all levels from beginner to advanced.

What type of planes will I train in?

We operate our own fleet of Light Sport Aircraft, specifically Bristell LSA, which are equipped with advanced avionics like dual MFD Garmin G3X and a 650, as well as autopilot and ADS-B. Having several planes available helps ensure no disruptions in your training. We also have several instructors with experience in other aircraft and a REDBIRD simulator for advanced type ratings.

How safe are they planes at your school?

Our emphasis on safety goes without saying, but we'll say it: Our curriculum is founded in the belief and practice that safety is our first priority. The flight school owns and operates a fleet of brand new Bristell LSA, which undergo preventive maintenance as required by the FAA and Manufacturer's Operating Instructions, as well as a precision pre-flight check before every lesson.

Where are your instructors trained?

We train our own safety oriented flight instructors and promote the use of a Personal Limitations Checklist.

SFA Personal Limitations Checklist was developed by our founder, Lou Mancuso, "The Landing Doctor", in 1992. Each flight instructor and learner completes a PLC with their mentor CFI. Since our learners follow the limits set in their PLC and do extensive crosswind landing practice, we have a flawless record of safety.

What is a Bristell LSA TAA?

Bristell Aircraft are light sport aircraft manufactured in the Czech Republic and assembled at the US factory in Pennsylvania. TAA are Technically Advanced Aircraft featuring multi-function displays, advanced avionics that incorporate navigation and weather data, and  auto-pilot control systems.

Each aircraft is inspected and approved for flight according to strict procedures and FAA regulations.

What is the timeline for getting my Sport Pilot Certificate (SPL)?

The Sebring Flight Academy has a drop out ratio of less than 1 in 10 because learners are trained to a higher standard and feel competent prior to solo and working the radios. You can easily earn your Sport Pilot Certificate within a month, starting from no experience at all!

Does the weather interfere with training frequently?

Florida weather is notorious for rapidly changing conditions which provide us ample opportunities to review weather conditions for flight planning. The flip side is that we fly year round while our northern counterparts can experience days and weeks of no fly conditions. Although thunderstorms are a factor, they are not a constant. Afternoon storms can be predicted with some degree of certainty so we take advantage of summer mornings and evenings, some of the most spectacular times to be in the sky.

When can I fly for the airlines?

For many, getting started is the hardest part...
